Move Your Site From Another Host¶
Switching hosts is a common step, and it doesn't have to be scary. Moving a website is a straightforward transfer of your files, database, and domain. Here's how to do it cleanly with Blue Nebula Hosting.
What you'll need¶
- Your new hosting details — the control-panel login sent in your welcome email
- Your files — downloaded from your old host
- Your database (if your site uses one, e.g. WordPress) — exported from your old host
- Your domain access — so you can point it to us
Time: most sites can be moved in a few hours. There can be a short window during domain propagation (up to 48 hours) when some people see the old site and some see the new one.
Step 1 — Set up your site here¶
Log in to your control panel and add the domain you're moving — see Add a website. This creates the folder your site will live in.
Step 2 — Move your files¶
- On your old host, make a full copy of your site's files (all the folders and files for your website). Your old host usually has a "download a backup" or File Manager option.
- In your control panel here, use the File Manager to upload them — see Upload files.
- Put them in the correct folder for your domain (usually
web/orpublic_html/).
Step 3 — Move your database (if you have one)¶
If your site uses a database (WordPress, an online store, a membership site) you'll need to move it too:
- On your old host, export the database — usually an "Export" button. This creates a
.sqlfile. - Here, create a database in your control panel — see Create a database.
- Import the
.sqlfile into your new database. - Update your site's configuration file (e.g.
wp-config.phpfor WordPress) with the new database name, username, and password.
Step 4 — Point your domain to us¶
Once everything is in place, update your domain's nameservers (or its A record) to point to Blue Nebula Hosting — see Point your domain.
Step 5 — Test before you cancel the old host¶
Visit your site and check:
- The homepage loads correctly
- Your pages, images, and links all work
- Email works (if you have it)
- Any forms or features work
Wait from a few minutes to 48 hours for DNS to settle, then test again. Once you're happy, you can cancel your old host — see Cancel a service.
Don't cancel your old host until your site is working here. Keep both running during the move so nothing goes down.
Common gotcha: hardcoded links¶
Some site builders store your old address in the database. If your images or links still point to the old address, let us know or update them — this is usually a quick fix once the content is in place.
