What Is a Server?

"Server" is a word you hear constantly in hosting, but it can feel vague. Here's what it actually means, in plain language.

A server is just a computer

A server is a computer that's connected to the internet all the time and stores the files that make up websites. When someone types your domain into their browser, it's the server that sends them your site.

You already use servers without realizing it — every website, app, and online service you use runs on one.

Think of it like a building

  • Your website is the contents — the shelves, products, and signs.
  • The server is the building that holds them.
  • Hosting is renting space in that building and keeping the lights on.

Different kinds of servers

Do you need to know this?

Not really — that's the point of hosting. You don't have to run or understand the server; you rent space on one and we handle the technical side. But now you know what the word means.
