Domain Transfer Checklist¶
Moving your domain to a new registrar (or to us) is a different process from moving a website — the domain is the address itself. Here's how to transfer it safely.
Note: a domain transfer moves where the domain is registered. If you're instead pointing an existing domain at our hosting, see Point your domain.
Before you transfer¶
- [ ] Unlock the domain. Most domains are "locked" by default. Unlock it at your current registrar.
- [ ] Get the authorization code (EPP). Your registrar gives you a transfer code (also called an auth code or EPP code).
- [ ] Wait 60 days if needed. Some registrars block transfers within 60 days of registration or a recent transfer.
- [ ] Confirm the domain is at least 60 days old. Newly registered domains often can't transfer immediately.
- [ ] Check your contact info is up to date. The transfer confirmation goes to the domain's registered email.
During the transfer¶
- [ ] Start the transfer. Provide the auth code to the new registrar (us).
- [ ] Approve the transfer. Confirm the transfer request from the email you receive.
- [ ] Wait for the transfer to complete. This usually takes a few days to a week.
After the transfer¶
- [ ] Check your DNS. Make sure your website and email records are set correctly. See The complete guide to DNS records.
- [ ] Point your domain. If you're hosting with us, point your domain. See Point your domain.
- [ ] Renew on time. Make sure auto-renew is on so you don't lose it. See Renew a domain.
Things to know¶
- Your site may briefly go down during a transfer if DNS changes. Test after it settles.
- The transfer doesn't change your website content — it only moves the domain registration. Your hosting is separate.
- Keep the domain's contact email current — that's how you'll get renewal and transfer notices.
