Introduction to WordPress¶
WordPress is the software that powers a huge portion of the websites you visit every day. If you've ever wanted a professional site without hiring a developer, this is the most common way to get there.
What WordPress is¶
WordPress is a content management system (CMS) — software that lets you create, edit, and manage a website from a simple dashboard, without touching code. You write text, add images, and publish, all through a friendly interface.
It's free and open-source, and you install it on your own hosting. That means you own it — no monthly software fee, and you can customize it however you like.
Why it's so popular¶
- Easy to use. You add and edit content from a dashboard, like a word processor.
- Flexible. Thousands of themes (designs) and plugins (add-ons) let you add features.
- Great for business. Blogs, business sites, online stores, portfolios — WordPress does them all.
- You own it. It runs on your hosting, so it's yours.
What you'll use day to day¶
- Posts — for blog articles and updates.
- Pages — for static content like "About" and "Contact."
- Themes — the design of your site.
- Plugins — extra features, like contact forms, galleries, and speed tools.
Before you install¶
You'll need hosting with a database. Most hosting — including ours — offers a one-click WordPress installer, so you don't configure anything manually. See Install WordPress for the step-by-step.
Is WordPress right for you? For most small businesses, yes — it's the best balance of easy and flexible. If you'd rather not manage software at all, ask us about a simpler approach. See Contact support.
