Email Migration Checklist¶
Moving your email to a new provider is a bit different from moving a website — it's about moving your mailboxes and getting your devices to connect to the new server. Here's how to do it cleanly.
Where you're going: you can move email to a new host with us — either with your hosting (see Email) or as a standalone service (see Email Hosting).
Before you migrate¶
- [ ] Back up your existing email. If you have old messages you want to keep, export them or download them.
- [ ] Note your email addresses. List every mailbox you need to recreate.
- [ ] Have your new account ready. Set up the mailboxes first. See Create an email address.
During the migration¶
- [ ] Recreate your mailboxes. Set up each address on the new service.
- [ ] Move old messages. Import or download any email you want to keep. See Set up on a computer.
- [ ] Update your DNS records. Set your MX, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records so email is delivered to the new server. See The complete guide to DNS records and Email deliverability.
After the migration¶
- [ ] Update your devices. Change the mail server settings in your phone and computer. See Set up on your phone and Set up on a computer.
- [ ] Test sending and receiving. Send a test email to yourself and from a different account.
- [ ] Check webmail. Make sure you can log in and read mail in the browser. See Webmail.
- [ ] Keep an eye on delivery. Watch that new mail lands in your inbox, not spam. See Email deliverability.
A note on downtime¶
There may be a brief period where your DNS changes spread across the internet. During this time, email might route to the old or new server. This is normal — test after it settles.
