Website Migration Checklist

Moving your website to a new host can feel daunting, but with a simple checklist it's straightforward. This page walks you through everything, before, during, and after.

First: if you're moving a WordPress site, see the WordPress migration guide for the specific steps. If you're moving your domain, see Domain transfer checklist.

Before you move

  • [ ] Back up your site. Download your files and database. See Backups.
  • [ ] Note your settings. Record your email accounts, database names, and any custom config.
  • [ ] Have your new account ready. Set up hosting and a domain with us. See Add a website.
  • [ ] Plan your downtime. Some sites go briefly offline during a move; pick a quiet time.

During the move

  • [ ] Upload your files. Use the file manager or an FTP/SFTP client. See Upload files.
  • [ ] Recreate your database. Import your data. See Create a database.
  • [ ] Update your config. Point your site's configuration at the new database and paths.
  • [ ] Reinstall any software. WordPress, plugins, and themes — see Install WordPress.

After the move

  • [ ] Point your domain at the new host. See Point your domain.
  • [ ] Set up your email. Recreate mailboxes or update settings. See Create an email address.
  • [ ] Test everything. Check your site, forms, images, and email all work.
  • [ ] Update DNS records. Make sure your A, MX, and TXT records are correct. See The complete guide to DNS records.
  • [ ] Once it's all working, cancel the old host. Don't cancel until you've verified the new site is live.
