How to Build a Website for Beginners

You don't need to be a programmer to build a website. In fact, most small business sites are built by people who've never written a line of code. Here's the simplest path, step by step.

First, decide what kind of site you want

Two main routes:

  • A website builder — a drag-and-drop tool where you pick a template, add text and images, and publish. Fast and easy, but less flexible.
  • WordPress — the most popular website software in the world. You install it on your hosting, pick a theme, and add content. More flexible, and what most small businesses use. See Introduction to WordPress.

For most small businesses, WordPress is the best choice — it's powerful, free, and easy to manage once set up.

The 5 steps

  1. Get hosting. This is where your site lives. See What is web hosting? and Choose a hosting plan.
  2. Get a domain name. Your address, like yourbusiness.com. See What is a domain name? and Register a domain.
  3. Install website software. Most hosting lets you install WordPress in a few clicks — see Install WordPress.
  4. Add your content. Choose a theme, add pages, write about your business, and upload images. See Upload files.
  5. Make it live and secure. Point your domain at your site (see Point your domain) and add SSL for the padlock (see Secure your site (SSL)).

Don't overthink it

The hardest part for most beginners is just starting. With hosting, a domain, and WordPress, you can have a professional site live in an afternoon.
