What Is SSD Storage?

You'll see SSD on every hosting plan. Here's what it means and why it matters.

SSD is fast storage

SSD stands for Solid-State Drive. It's the storage where your website's files live — images, text, code, and more. Compared to older hard drives (HDD), an SSD is much faster at reading and writing data.

That speed matters because every time someone visits your site, the server reads files from storage. Faster storage means faster loading for your visitors.

A simple analogy

Think of storage as your workspace. An SSD is like a tidy, fast desk where you can grab what you need instantly. An old hard drive is like a filing cabinet — everything's there, but it takes longer to dig through it.

SSD vs. NVMe

You might also see NVMe on some plans. NVMe is an even faster type of SSD. Our VPS, game servers, and dedicated servers use NVMe for the best performance.

Why it matters for you

  • Faster sites — visitors don't wait as long.
  • Better search ranking — speed is a ranking factor.
  • Smoother apps and databases — faster read/write.

Storage vs. bandwidth

These are different: - Storage — how much space you have for files. See What is SSD storage?. - Bandwidth — how much data your site can send to visitors. See What is bandwidth?.
