Transfer a Domain

Moving a domain from one registrar to another is called a transfer. You might do this to bring all your domains under one roof, or to move one you own to Blue Nebula Hosting. Here's how it works.

What a domain transfer is

A domain is registered with a registrar (the company that manages the domain itself). A transfer moves it to a different registrar without changing the domain's address or your ownership of it.

Domains and hosting are separate. Transferring a domain doesn't move your website; it moves the domain's registration. You can host a site with us and keep the domain registered elsewhere.

How long does a transfer take?

Usually 5–7 days. During that time the domain is in a "pending transfer" state. Your website and email keep working (you don't go offline).

Before you transfer

Check these first so the transfer goes through smoothly:

  1. Domain is unlocked — most registrars lock domains by default. You must unlock it at your current registrar.
  2. Have the authorization (EPP) code — sometimes called an "auth code" or "transfer code." Your current registrar provides it.
  3. Domain is 60+ days old — a domain can't be transferred within 60 days of registration or a previous transfer.
  4. No pending renewal or lock — make sure there aren't blocks or an active transfer already in progress.
  5. Email is up to date — the transfer is confirmed via the domain's registered email.

How to start a transfer

  1. In your account area, go to Domains and choose Transfer a domain.
  2. Enter the domain name.
  3. Enter the authorization code from your current registrar.
  4. Confirm and pay any transfer fee (if applicable). Renewal is included in the transfer.

Your current registrar gets a transfer request and will send a confirmation. Approve it there, or it finalizes automatically after a few days.

After the transfer

  • Your domain now lives with Blue Nebula Hosting.
  • Its DNS records and hosting are unchanged — your website and email keep working.
  • You can now manage the domain, its DNS, and renewals from your account area.

Transferring a domain out

To move a domain away from us: unlock it in your account area and get the authorization code, then start the transfer at the new registrar. Your website keeps working during the move.
